Perilous wilderness aside, you’re also faced with feverish nightmares of giant clowns and fire, an electronics repair shop with a grotesque comparison to a butcher’s Frankenstein outlet, an apartment filled with oddly malicious high-tech items, and a junkyard where the unwanted, elderly, and damaged objects live their lives in constant fear of being taken up by a god-like magnet and crushed into smithereens.Īll with a catchy soundtrack. They sat on a timeline that began with innocent fun and slowly descended into a chaos feted with harassment and deviation when the mice tried to take Blanket and the creatures were making grotesque faces in the reflection of Toaster’s chrome. The overtly curious and rambunctious squirrels and frogs actually freaked me out. The meadow scene is a trip and a half, and though it was certainly the most colorful and “pleasant” scene in the movie, it was actually one that unsettled me the most. While Toaster and Lampy and Vacuum may be a little more brave-hearted in contrast to Blanket’s incessant whining, each character still shows an obvious twinge of fear and uncertainty, which makes it a very realistic example of this sort of journey. There’s an unusual dynamic between the characters that doesn’t often appear in children’s media, and that’s trepidation.
When we come to the AC unit, I would always turn the volume down or cover my ears. The lack of cheery background music to fill the silence at all times is really poignant. The sense of abandonment really shines through in this one.
